Garage Floor Tiles vs Epoxy, Paint and Mats

Which one lasts, and which one is worth paying for? Here is how they compare.

For a garage floor that lasts, the result depends on the material, the installation and the condition of the concrete underneath. Tiles, mats, paint and epoxy coatings work differently, so it helps to compare how each is installed and what you are paying for.

Garage Floor Tiles

Garage floor tiles sit on top of the concrete and connect together to cover the surface. They leave seams between sections, which can collect dirt and debris, and a damaged tile may need to be replaced on its own. We install floor coatings, and we do not install tiles.

Garage Floor Mats

Garage floor mats cover the concrete without bonding to the slab. They are convenient for covering one area, but the concrete underneath stays untreated, and a mat can shift depending on the product and how it is used.

Garage Floor Paint

Garage floor paint is a thin coating applied over the concrete surface. How it performs depends on the condition and preparation of the floor, and old paint has to be ground off before a coating system can go down.

Epoxy Coating

An epoxy coating system is built in layers and finished with a topcoat, and it bonds to concrete that has been properly ground and prepared. We repair cracks and prepare the surface before applying the system you choose, so the finished floor is ready for regular use.

Which One Makes Sense for You?

Think about how you use your garage, the condition of the concrete and the finish you want before deciding what to pay for. Tiles and mats cover the surface, while a professionally installed coating bonds to prepared concrete. See our garage floor coatings or the flake colors we install.

Garage Flooring Questions

Answers to common questions about tiles, mats, paint and coatings.

Are garage floor tiles better than epoxy?

Tiles are separate pieces that sit on the concrete, while an epoxy system bonds to properly prepared concrete and forms a continuous coated surface. That is the main difference to weigh.

Do garage floor mats protect the concrete?

Mats cover the area beneath them, but they do not bond to the concrete. The condition of the slab underneath still matters.

Can epoxy be applied over garage floor paint?

Old paint must be ground off before the new coating system is installed. The concrete is then prepared for the system you choose.

How much does a professionally coated garage floor cost?

The cost depends on the floor area, the condition of the concrete, the preparation required and the finish. Our starting prices are on the cost calculator page, and a free estimate gives you a number for your garage.
